Edgehill Memorial Parade plus Skirmish at Upton House, 22 October 2006

Six Waller’s attended the Edgehill memorial parade this year, three owner-riders (Deb, Jennie and Rob) on horse and three on foot (Shaun, Kelly and Hazel) leading the parade. Waller’s cornet was placed on the drumhead alter along with all the other regimental colours near to the memorial stone. The army chaplain from MOD Kineton lead the service.

After the service, the owner-riders went to theNational Trust property Upton House to support Houghton’s regiment (Royalist). The troop performed a small display in front of the house and then attacked the foot troops. First we were repulsed and then we broke them. Jennie captured their colour and paraded it along the spectators.

There were more visitors this time than there was last time Waller’s owner-riders were there.

The 2006 season is now complete and we look forward to next year’s events.

The Battle of Ripple, Gloucestershire, 8 October 2006

This annual event had two Waller's owner riders and six Rupert's in attendance for the morning church parade and afternoon battle. The battle was hard fought but Waller's acquitted themselves with distinction in spite of being heavily outnumberes (and nicked a Rupert in the process!). Photos will be added to the 2006 Battles gallery shortly.

Display/talk at Malvern College, Worcestershire, 7 October 2006

Four Waller's with two horses gave a talk and display to the Foundation Year (Year 9) of this famous public school. We were very well received, and even now, four days later, the children are still talking about the visit. For more photos see the Miscellaneous Gallery and the Dragoons Gallery, and to see the College's account, go to their website.

The Battle of Sandbach, Cheshire, 16/17 September 2006

A superb end to the season, this was a memorable little muster on an interesting battlefield with great mounts from Atkinson Action Horses. After a hard fought and eventful battle, the final charge off the field with an enthusiastic cheer for Waller's from the crowd, left all of us with enormous grins. The Battle of Southwell, Nottinghamshire, 27/28 August 2006

This was another very busy and successful muster, with the delightfully ironic touch of Waller's owner riders providing the King's Lifeguard for the cameo of the king's surrender on the Saturday, as our noble Royalist colleagues were unable to help. A tight battlefield combined with a long ride from the horselines to the field made for a challenging muster, but both battles passed without incident. Photographs on 2006 Battles.

The Battle of Spetchley Manor, Worcestershire, 5/6 August 2006

Spetchley Park in sunny Worcestershire saw our troop in action yet again. This time we were faced with two enemies, Rupert’s (who fielded 18 troopers to our 14) and the continuing heat wave! But our brave soldiers did not falter even on Saturday, by far our busiest day: 0930 kit inspection, 1000 drill, 1300 mount for display, 1330 pre-battle display, 1400 main battle in which we potrayed the King's Lifeguard and then Cromwell's Ironsides, 1530 end of battle, 1630 tea and debrief,  and 1730 regimental sports day, which was won by the yellow team (Jenny, Alan, & Hugh).  Although we suffered some casualties (not on the field), we were strong enough to field a full compliment on Sunday where the only damage to Waller’s was a broken sword. A hard fought weekend but with much reward to our reputation. Photographs on 2006 Battles.

Croome and West Warwickshire Hunt Kennels Open Day, Severn Stoke, Worcestershire, 25 June 2006

During a long and very hot day Waller's owner riders and dragoons gave two dragoon and cavalry displays, as well as manning a small living history camp. We were very well received in spite of a new horse having to be pulled out of the second display, and rumour has it that we will be invited back next year. There was a lot of interest in the living history camp, and we have hopefully drummed up some visitors for the forthcoming nearby major battle at Spetchley Park. More photos in Miscellaneous Gallery.

Upton House, Warwickshire, 17 June 2006

We were invited to join in with a Living History event organised by Hoghton’s Regiment of Foote at the National Trust property of Upton House on the top of Edgehill. Two ironsides with horses and one dragoon attended this event. It was a very hot day, but we were camped in the orchard and chose the corner which boasted a huge tree that provided shade throughout the day. We did two displays during the day, showing the equipment and some basic cavalry drill, and then how cavalry works against the foot. The whole thing was a big hit with both the public and the organisers. Hoghton’s now know what we are capable of, so hopefully this will provide us with more Living History/display opportunities.

The Battle of Martson Moor, Wetherby, 28/29 May 2006

Shaun and Mark at WetherbyThe first major muster of the year was certainly a success for Waller’s Horse. Sunday morning the troop was up and on the horse lines by 0930. After a morning of drill and rehearsal we provided the pre-battle display, which was followed, 20 minutes later, by the main battle. We were using mostly novice horses but our riders proved their skill and there were no problems. Monday morning gave an opportunity fo a few new riders to take their riding tests, and, to their delight, all passed. Our CO was delighted with how we acquitted ourselves throughout the weekend, and we received a tremendous amount of positive feedback from other regiments. Photographs on 2006 Battles.

Grand Mustering of the Army of Parliament, Elvaston Castle 14/15 April 2006

In front of Elvaston CastleAnnual training for the Army of Parliament with a chance for Waller's owner riders to get their horses up to speed for the new season. This was a great social and a laid-back weekend, much enjoyed by all. There are photographs on 2006 Battles and Miscellaneous Gallery.

Living History in Worcester, 25 February 2006

SUe and Stephen on the Parliamentarian display at LHIWA long and busy day was had by the ironside and dragoon who attended, with around 2500 people passing through, and a lot of interest shown in Waller's Horse. Skirmish Magazine was in attendance, so look out for us in the April/May issue. More details can be found at Worcester Reenactors.

Edgehill Memorial Service, 23 October 2005

Jennie and Rob ready to lead the parade

This is an annual service on the site of the Battle of Edgehill, commemorating both those who died in the Civil Wars and deceased Sealed Knot members. This year the parade was led by Jennie and Rob on Jennie's two horses, JJ and Terek.

Visit to Malvern College, 8 October 2005

Year 9 is entranced by our display Malvern College, one of the country's top boarding schools, asked Waller's to come and speak to their Foundation Year (Year 9) pupils who spend three weeks studying the English Civil War. We entertained around 50 pupils for an hour and a half with two ironsides, two dragoons, a civilian and Capt Hill, plus two horses. Comments from the school included "Superb" and "Very impressive". For more photos see the Miscellaneous Gallery and the Dragoons Gallery, and to see the College's account, go to their website.

The Battle of Cheriton, August Bank Holiday 2005

Waller's three troops attacking the Forlorn Hope in turnThis was a unique event with Waller's fielding their largest ever number - 38 horses divided into three troops representing three of the regiments that took part in the original battle. Including the Royalist cavalry, there were well over 70 horses on the field. Drill and pre-battle displays meant that some members were in kit for nine hours and in the saddle for five on the Sunday, but it was an excellent experience, especially for the many guest riders who joined us, and helped us put on an outstanding multi-period display. Over half the horses were in battle for the first time, and, on the whole, coped amazingly well. For more photos of Cheriton, see the 2005 Battles Gallery
